Quote # 1: "Learn this then, fast learner. It took me five years as an apprentice to learn this skill. There's a boatload of you greenhorns landing every day,and you all think you're going to make a fortune in America. Well, don't hold your breath, girlie, because it's not going to happen." Man in the shoe shop, pg 68

Significance: The significance here relates to how Americans treat immigrants. In this quote a girl name Rose, Margaret Rose, is just looking for a job, and she walks into a shop and this man tells her that she basically should have never come here because they aren't going to make any money here. SO this basically shows that some people don't like immigrants. In the quote he also says that everyday more and more immigrants come. So far the man has only treated one character in the book unwelcoming, but what will others do?

Connection: I;m sure I cant really compare my connection to what people have done to Margaret Rose, but I think that everyone has been treated somewhat like the way Margaret Rose has been treated. My connection with the quote is when people tell me things. WHen people tell me things like "oh you can't do this." I think everyone hears something like that. People are told that like they have no chance, and that is what is basically happening in this quote. This man is telling Margaret ROse that she will never make it in America, she will never find any money. Comparing to my connections, people tell other people that they can't do something, like they can't do this, you will never be a star, things like that.

Question: What does greenhorns mean?

Quote # 2: "So ye think ye might have work for me?"
Margaret Rose, pg 71

Significance: This is relating to the challenges the characters in the book are facing and are going to face. In this quote it shows that someone is looking for a job, and that someone is Margaret Rose. Margaret Rose is looking for a job to support her family, and also so that her family can live somewhere else, because she doesn't like living with her snooty aunt and cousins. So far Margaret Rose hasn't found any work, but she is still looking. Margaret Rose is young to work, but because her father isn't with the family in America she has no choice. Soon  her mother is going to look for work too, but Margaret Rose wanted to try first.

Connection: I really don't have any connections, but Im sure getting a job is really hard. Sometimes it isn't that hard, but to get a job where you actually want to work, that has to be hard. So in the book I'm learning more about Elsa. I learned that this character isn't trying to really get rid of the Nolen family, but she is just trying to help. Actually she is doing both at the same time. I also think that she can be snobby. She tries to act nice, but she gives a tone that shows that she is faking.

Question? What is the place that Mrs. Murphy told Margaret to go to?

Quote1:I guess you have a nice quote but I kind of really don't understands what it means.

Significance:Well after reading your significance I could understand better.I agreee with you when you said that how people treat immigrants.I also agree with you that when Rose went to find a job she really couldnt find one to help her family.

Connection:I can also relate to you when you say that when theres always someone is not going to really agree with the things you do, like say no your not going to do this. Sometimes that gets really frustrating because when you know you have to do something for a reason one person has to always tell you know you cant do this.

Question:I really dont know what that word means

Quote2:I was going to choose that quote to but I thought it wouldnt mean so much. But I think its a good quote but doesnt explain to much.

Significance:You have a really nice explaination about the quote and I do agree with what you said about Rose.

Question:I really dont remember the answer to your question.

Quote #1: Response/ Comment: I thought the man in the shoe shop was really mean by how he treated Rose and for calling her a greenhorn in a bad way. Also by basically telling her that she should have never come here because she wasn't going to make any money here I think in this book most Americans treated the characters in the book in a really mean and bad way as if they weren't worth anything. I agree with you that most people don't like immigrants.

Question #1: Answer: A greenhorn is a newcomer, especially one who is unfamiliar with the ways of a place or group. I think in this book a greenhorn refers to an immigrant probably from Ireland.

Quote #2: Response/ Comment: I agree with you that this quote is relating to the challenges the characters in the book are facing and are going to face. I also think that Margaret Rose's aunt and cousins are snooty. I thought it was a big challenge for Margaret Rose to get a job because she had to go to about three different places to find a job.

Question #2: Answer: Mrs. Murphy told Margaret to go to a man called Mr. Moscovitz so that he can probably give Margaret Rose a job. Mr. Moscovitz ran a shop that made paper flowers. His shop was on Chrystie Street, one block over.
